Young Investigator Symposium
Call For Nominations Deadline January 15, 2012
The ACS DIC solicits nominations for the Young Investigator Symposium to be held on Sunday afternoon of the Fall 2012 ACS meeting in Philadelphia.
This DIC symposium honors talented young inorganic chemists, and provides a high-profile forum for them to present their research results. There will be a total of 8 speakers, and each will give a 30-minute presentation. The DIC will provide a $1000 honorarium for each speaker and a plaque to commemorate her/his participation in the event.
Only DIC members are eligible. Candidates must be enrolled as graduate students or hold positions as postdoctoral fellows (academia, industry or government lab), and be no more than one year beyond completion of the Ph.D. at the time of the nomination. Visiting scholars and similar titles are not eligible. The speakers will be selected from nominations submitted by January 15, 2012. The awards will be announced on February 28, 2012. Awardees must not have accepted a permanent, independent position at the time of selection. Candidates will be asked to verify that they have not accepted a permanent position before being named as awardees.
Nominations may be submitted by a research advisor of the candidate. Self-nominations are not allowed. Nominations should include:
1) A cover page containing on separate lines: a) the candidate's first and last name, b) the candidate's physical and email addresses valid until August 2012, c) the ACS membership number, d) the DIC membership status, e) the affiliation, f) the name of the advisor, g) the number of publications, h) the number of publications on which the candidate is the first author, i) the most important previous awards received by the candidate, j) references of the five most important papers published by the candidate.
2) A nomination letter limited to two pages (single-spaced, 12-pt Times or 11-pt Arial font). This letter should contain i) a description of the research accomplishments of the nominee; ii) a description of the research topic to be presented at the symposium and why this would be of broad interest.
3) The candidate's resume including a list of publications and presentations .
Additional communications with the selection committee are strongly discouraged, and may result in disqualification of the candidate. The selection committee consists of the 2012 DIC Chair Jeff Long and the chairs of the four DIC subdivisions. Applications are to be submitted by January 15, 2012 by email attachment to younginvestigator@acsdic.org as a single pdf file with the title consisting of the last name of the candidate (ie: "LASTNAME.pdf"). 2012 ExxonMobil Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship
Call For Nominations Deadline January 15, 2012
The ExxonMobil Foundation is sponsoring the ExxonMobil Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship, which includes an award in the form of an unrestricted grant of $10,000. The Solid State and Materials Chemistry Subdivision of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry administers the selection of the recipient. The fellowship will be formally presented at the Fall 2012 ACS Meeting in Philadelphia.
The Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship recognizes young scientists who have made substantial contributions to the discipline of solid-state chemistry and have the potential to emerge as leaders in the field. The Fellowship also recognizes solid-state chemistry as a critical science and engineering discipline that is a vital component of the research enterprise in the United States. The recipient of the fellowship must hold a tenure-track faculty position at a U.S. institution, must not yet have received tenure, and, preferably, is not currently in the final stage of tenure review. Selection will be based on past and current independent contributions and on the potential for future contributions to our knowledge of synthesis, properties, reactivity, structure, and bonding in solids.
Nominations must contain: (1) a nomination letter; (2) a one-page summary of current research interests; (3) a brief vitae; (4) a publication list; (5) two additional supporting letters; (6) copies of not more than three recent publications. The deadline for nominations is January 15, 2012. The award will be announced on March 1, 2012.

DIC Student Travel Award Program
The DIC is accepting applications for student travel awards for graduate and undergraduate students presenting research talks or posters at ACS National Meetings. The upper amount of the award is $800.00. The deadline for receipt of applications is January 15 for the Spring ACS National Meeting, and June 1 for the Fall ACS National Meeting. Winners will be notified by March 1 and August 1, respectively, for the Spring and Fall meetings.
Selection process: Applications submitted by undergraduate researchers, graduate students in the first two years of their PhD and graduate students in the final years of their PhD will be reviewed separately. Within each category, the selection process will be based on scientific merit. Preference will be given to applicants who have not been awarded a Student Travel Award previously.
Eligibility:
1. The student must be a member of the DIC and must present his/her paper in the DIC program. Students who are not making presentations are ineligible.
2. Only one nomination will be accepted per research group for each meeting. Exceptions may be granted for collaborative projects.

The following items should be submitted after the form in this order:
1) A proof of your current ACS and DIC membership status such as a copy of your receipt or membership certificate – If you are not in possession of one of these documents, please contact the ACS membership services at 800-333-9511 to request a copy).
2) An abstract of the work to be presented in the DIC program.
3) A resume, including a list of publications and presentations.
4) A recommendation letter from your research advisor.

Nanoscience Award
Call For Nominations Deadline January 15, 2012
The Nanoscience Subdivision of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry (DIC) is pleased to solicit nominations for the Inorganic Nanoscience Award, sponsored by the University of South Carolina NanoCenter. The award consists of $3000 made out to the winner and a plaque to be presented to the recipient at the Fall 2012 ACS meeting in Philadelphia. The recipient should be based at either an academic institution or a national laboratory in North America. The intent of the award is to recognize sustained excellence, dedication, and perseverance in research and service in the area of inorganic nanoscience. Recipients are expected to be at the mid-career stage (i.e. post tenure and between the ages of 36-45). Preference will be given to nominees who have not won an ACS award during the past five years.
Self-nomination is allowed. Each nomination should include (1) a 5-page curriculum vitae; (2) a list of the nominees’ 10 most significant publications; and (3) and a one-page statement that highlights the key research discoveries that merit a national award in the area of inorganic nanoscience. Each nominee should also arrange for three letters of support to be sent separately. Nominations and letters of support should be emailed as pdf attachments to Teri Odom, Nanoscience Subdivision Chair, at nanoawards@acsdic.org. ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry
Call For Nominations Deadline June 30, 2012
Nominations for the 2012 ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry are being solicited. The purpose of this award is to recognize achievement by undergraduate students in inorganic chemistry and to encourage further study in the field. Every ACS Certified Department is eligible to nominate one student for this award. The student nominee will have demonstrated excellence in inorganic chemistry at the undergraduate level based on any combination of research, coursework, and /or motivation / interest / dedication as defined by their nominating institution and should have future plans that include a career in chemistry. Each student nominated will receive a certificate and letter of commendation from the Chair of the Division of Inorganic Chemistry.
A request for nominations will be sent to the Chairs of all ACS Certified Departments in January. Nominations for the 2012 Award can be submitted to http://www.ionicviper.org/dicaward/ and will be accepted until June 30, 2012. ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Award for Undergraduate Research
Call For Nominations Deadline January 15, 2012
Purpose: To recognize the collaborative research of an outstanding North American undergraduate student and her or his preceptor(s) in the field of inorganic chemistry, as broadly defined. One award will be given in each of three categories based on the institution of the preceptor:
• Primarily Undergraduate Institution
• Research-Intensive University (or other non-PUI college or university)
• Corporate, National, or Federal Laboratory
Nature: The undergraduate student(s) will receive $1,000 and a plaque. The student's preceptor(s) will receive $1,000 and a plaque for permanent display at the institution. Up to $2,000 will be reimbursed by the division to be split equally between student and preceptor for travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented during an INOR-sponsored symposium in which the undergraduate awardee will a present talk on the recognized research.
Eligibility: The undergraduate student nominee must have completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry within the 12-month period before the deadline for receipt of nominations. The award will recognize only work done while the nominee was an undergraduate student. The award will be granted without regard to age or nationality. The preceptor(s) may be a faculty member or staff scientist at any higher educational institution or corporate, federal, or national laboratory in North America. Self-nominations (i.e. nominations submitted by the preceptor or the student) will not be considered. The preceptor should be an active DIC member.
Nominating Procedure: A nomination consists of:
1. A duly completed nomination form (link), to include 25-word maximum citation for the award and the contact specifics for nominator, preceptor, and student.
2. Date baccalaureate degree conferred/anticipated to be conferred.
3. ACS member number of preceptor; division member number of preceptor and student.
4. Curriculum vitae for preceptor (2-page maximum) and student (1-page maximum).
5. One-page synopsis that (i) discusses the impact/merit of research performed by the undergraduate nominee explicitly detailing the student’s contribution; and (ii) describes the nature of the preceptor–student mentoring component beyond that attending direction of the research.
6. For the preceptor, a proof of current ACS and DIC membership status (copy of receipt or membership certificate).
Submission: All documents, in English, should be assembled into single pdf file and emailed to ugresearch@acsdic.org. Please, use the nominees' last names in the file name (i.e. preceptor_student.pdf).
